Stuck after messing with fumaric acid and acetone Options

I have had a sort of "left over" collection from evaporating the naptha that kind of resembled a very dark thick syrup. I dumped a decent amount of acetone on it and waited for it to dissolve, then poured that through a filter into a different container and added fumaric acid and it all went cloudy and I let it sit over night. Next day the acetone looked fairly clear and there was crystals and whatnot all over the glass, I pulled out most of the acetone and let what I couldn't get evaporate. Next I broke the crystals free from the glass and threw them in a different container with water and lye, ph paper read 12ish so I thought that was good. After shaking it for a while I thought I was ok to add naptha to pull everything back out just as I did long ago with the first extraction from the bark. I instead find an odd tan layer that doesn't seem to want to dissolve in the solvent or the water. I removed most of it and let it sit on the side while I continue to pull with the naptha. Is this stuff the nmt? If so what can I do with it to make it at least the goo it was before or crystals if possible?
