The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

This is big news.

They've killed two birds with one stone, not only have they found evidence of gravitational waves but they have also experimentally verified a key prediction of the theory of inflation.

Looks like Nobel prizes all round.

This is very interesting! Maybe with the help of this scientist will be able to look further back in time than have been possible with the cosmic microwave background radiation. As I understod it these gravitational waves were created just ~10^-33 seconds after time started which is a lot less than the 380000 years that is the limit in how far back in time we can study the universe with the cosmic background radiation.

does this impli that energy in the early universe is even greater than expected?

I don't know but according to an astrophysicist friend of mine it should eventually be possible to calculate the energy density of the very young universe from these results which according to him was rather important.

The amount of energy in the universe when it was young is exactly the same as it is today by the way because energy can not be created nor destroyed.
