Playing Music during a dmt/ayahuasca session Yay or Nay? Options

My first ever Ayahuasca experience involved me lying in my bed listening to music (I had severely underestimated its power- thinking it would be similar to shrooms).
Even though it was a reality shattering experience, I had no fear WHATSOEVER as the music I was listening to brought me into a 'trance' where I was able to let go of everything. It got to the point I could no longer hear the music through my headphones.

The next time I decided to take Ayahuasca much more seriously, and was in complete silence (on my own). I ended up having a very bad time, and it left me very scared to touch it ever again.
I was hearing things that repeated themselves over and over again as if time was folding in on itself, and with no music to give me a reference point of time, I felt like I was lost in complete madness.

I feel like I want a 'true' dmt experience without music but I find music to be so comforting and it always seems to pull me out of negative thought patterns.

What are your thoughts? Would music interfere with breaking through? Does it contaminate the experience? Or is it a useful tool for conquering fear and letting go?

Peace,
OneEye

I always have my 200 hours of music, comedy, poetry. Your playlist will amaze you with intricacies and synchronicity you never knew existed. To each his own.
Fear, belief, love phenomena that determined the course of our lives. These forces begin long before we are born and continue after we perish. We cross and recross our old paths like figure skaters; our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.

Others will undoubtedly have different opinions than I (and many of them are vastly more experienced with ayahuasca than I) but my take goes as follows.
In reference to a 'true DMT experience', by definition there is no such single identifiable thing. The term 'DMT experience' by itself makes that clear in its two components. Even if DMT were a fixed thing (no variation of contaminant alkaloids, etc) 'experience' points toward the experiencor, in this case you, in someone elses case them.
I would suggest simply examining yourself closely and finding what is best for your personal temperment with attention paid to the fact that it might change with time.

How different people respond to music, tripping or sober, is a very individual thing and its not a fixed relationship.
And every individual trip is its own thing, dont read too much into one data point.

Tripping is a valuable tool to explore your own psyche from different angles, how you relate to music or no, to sensuality or no, to laughing or crying, it all just serves to teach you volumes about who you are.

And if you didnt believe my jive about no 'true DMT experience', keep in mind the ayahuasceros often sing and use rattles when they give people aya so they at least think silence isnt mandatory.

Try singing your own medicine/power/beloved songs sometime. Wink

Most times I wouldn't even hear the music. I like music during straight dmt mostly because it helps set the mood right. It's also enjoyable when you return.

I've done both equally. Prefer music.

Sometimes either.

All good.

This is an old topic, and so this new post may become 'Frozen' because responses to it can be found throughout the years on the Nexus.

But, I simply find that music playing can remind me that I am not dead, and that keeps me feeling safe, but since music grounds me, I seem to not go as far as I sometimes would like.

Basically, music is good for fear, bad for advanced experiences.

Peace!

Oh yeah, one can use it as a timer. Basically, if you know that the song lasts 5 minutes, then that can help you gauge how long you've been in Hyperspace. A 10 minutes song is often the best, or 5.

Doing high-high doses, music is not even noticed though.
Meditate before you venture, take it seriously, use it as medicinal—it is good psychotherapy if needed. Realize that you, the Earth, others, and the Universe are all one and the same process. Then take that knowledge back to become, as you already are, one with nature. Eternity in every moment. Divinity in every particle. All is one organism.

Anytime i've ever taken Ayahuasca, music imho was/is a must. There's been a few times where i haven't had music going, and when there's no music it does indeed get scary or frightful for me (atleast when i'm coming up).

One thing i've noticed though, is that music is so incredibly awesome during an Ayahuasca experience for me, it's like i can separate out the different instruments within the music and i get all these visualizations behind closed eyes that accompany the music/sounds.

And plus, perhaps one of the biggest and bestest things music brings to the Ayahuasca picture, is feeling the beat/rhythm and you just wanna get up and dance (or atleast i do) lol.

I couldn't agree more with you. In my one and only ayahuasca experience so far I was so thankful for the music. It really guided me and at some point I too got up and started dancing. This was an amazing feeling.

Until now I have never tried tripping without music, maybe just some parts here and there but never a full trip. Honestly the thought of it scares me to death.
This doesn't mean that I have never gone beyond, because I have. A lot of times I won't even hear the music anymore.

I find that when doing any type of psychedelic the music I listen to highly guides the experience. For better or for worse. Sometimes when I just sit in silence during the psychedelic experience it can be the most serene and peaceful thing; On the other hand, it can create a very dark and lonely experience which some(me being one of them) would understandably fear.

I have broken through after smoking DMT and I was listening to medieval-like music. I could hear the music perfectly while in another realm. This realm was highly influenced by medieval culture.

Some playlists are just trustworthy for a great experience and I stick by those with the occasional new piece integrated.

Enjoy.

What about actually *playing* music (like drumming or piano playing or guitar playing or singing) while on DMT/Ayahuasca?

I find that DMT/Ayahuasca practically *forces* me to play music or vocalize. I'm a musician/composer, so it makes sense. That's how I purge. Through sound.
