I just wanted to make sure it is safe to use a coffee filter and my plastic funnel for step 10. I just keep thinking of all the warnings about using lye.

Slowly add sodium carbonate (or lye) to your harmala tea At first it might bubble from sodium carbonate reacting with acetic acid from vinegar until it neutralizes. Dont add too fast or it might bubble up and make a mess. After it stops bubbling, the colour starts changing as the pH rises and alkaloids start precipitating. Keep adding a bit of sodium carbonate even after colour stopped changing, just to make sure everything will precipitate. Dont worry if there's a lot of sodium carbonate because any excess will be removed in the next step. Let it rest for at least a couple of hours in the fridge, and then filter with a coffee filter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It should be fine. You really only have to worry about plastics when dealing with organic solvents (i.e. naphtha, xylene, acetone, etc). The coffee filter is mostly cellulose which is harmless if you ingested it. In my experience strong solutions of NaOH will start to soften coffee filters to the point where they tear more easily, but this can be avoided in rue extractions by using sodium carbonate instead.

thank you
I was going to use the sodium carb but I said screw it and just used the lye instead, because he mentioned it would be easier to filter. The filtering process of rue is a real pain in the butt. Once again thxz.
