Emulsion free extraction? Options

Hello I've been doing a generic STB but have been running into emulsions quite frequently that won't break. I'm using naphtha, lye, and d-h2o currently.

I'm willing to modify my tek to something different if it would help me avoid emulsions. I've heard sodium carbonate will allow this and also will get the pH high enough to pull out the goods?

Any other tek recommendations that are emulsion proof? A/B?

Did you check the FAQ?

You mean this: https://wiki.dmt-nexus.m...nd_Troubleshooting_Guide

Yes... And I don't see an answer to my specific question in the FAQ leading me to wonder if your talking about a different FAQ? Or your just assuming that I haven't researched? Rolling eyes

I have also read just about every extract tek on this page here: https://wiki.dmt-nexus.me/Category:Extraction_Tek

Most of the STB's bring up the topic of emulsions but don't give any in depth information on a tek that is the most emulsion resistant or includes steps to avoid emulsions. Which is what I'm asking about / for. Big grin

The FAQ gives a few methods to combat emulsions but a simple forum search yielded tons of information on that anyways...

Most emulsions resolve themself with time(1h-24h), and very minor agitation. One method I use is to just swirl the liquids around in the jar like one would do to be fancy while drinking wine. This causes the emulsions to. Mix around a bit without causing new emulsions to form. Also consider warming your solution in a hot water bath. Emulsions break up easier in warmer solutions. Also, using naptha that is already saturated in plant fats will eliminate emulsions. So save your naptha and use it again. Clean naptha seems to not break down emulsions as well as plant oil-laden napptha. Most importantly, just wait. Like I said earlier. Most emulsions settle themselves. 24-48 hours might be necesarry for some emulsions to settle. Refrain from shaking your jars like a madman. Though it seems tempting, its not that much more effective than end over end, but causes a great deal of stress. Last but not least is ADD SALT. It will nearly double your end yield and will drastically reduce the amount of emulsion you have.

I find that a little extra base can go a long way in breaking up emulsions as well.

All of those FAQ questions deal with emulsion issues, specially the second one. The same tricks for stopping an emulsion also work for preventing emulsion, most notably, not shaking but rather stirring layers, adding excess lye and adding salt.
