Magnetic stirrer question Options

So swim bought a magnetic stirrer, but is having some issues. The stirrer is the correct size for the amount that needs stirred, but it seems that the stir bar is getting hung up on the powdered bark that sits on the bottom of the container. After a bit of manual stirring with a glass stir rod, swim was able to get the stir bar moving again, but not able to get a good vortex. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

The stirrer is a Hanna instruments heavy duty stirrer, and the stir bar used is the included bar that's aprox. 1-7/8'' x 3/8'' smooth side (no ridge in the middle).
