The best salt to use, is ionized salt. De-ionized isn't nearly as effective. Read the box, and see if it tells you anything about ionization. Along with that, don't be using distilled water. I know it sounds good due to the more sterile environment argument, but its actually counter productive in this case. Distilled water has had most of its ions intentionally removed. Instead, filtered faucet water is better.

Just keep blowing a fan over it. Not directly onto it, just over. You don't want any possible crystals flying away. For general safety, don't put a fan in the window, and have the fumes being sucked through the fans. People have died from the flammable vapors of various chemicals, igniting due to the sparks created in the fan. Your probably dealing with a small amount anyways, but always be safe. Blow it over the product, and out a window.
