...and here are a few other torches (I don't know what the little one in front is but it isn't a torch or pedro). I can't believe how big the one got in such a modest pot.

Yes, I believe all were acquired from bouncing bear between 2005-2008. I'm curious why you ask.

nicechrisman...could you elaborate on which pics you're referring to and what characteristics make you so certain? I can't imagine every one in the above pics are all the same species.

Sorry that's kinda a joke in the cactus world because there's so much constant debate between "experts" as to what is peruvianus and what is cuzco. Seems different people have different definitions. And yeah, like dg said bouncing bear is known to have sold cuzco for along time as peruvianus.

is cuzcoensis very active? The spines on my "peruvianus" on the regrowth part anyway are a fiery orange sort of color and close to an inch long..so I am guessing that means it's not a cuzcoensis? I got it locally from an entheo shop a couple years ago.

These specimens were obtained as T. Peruvianus from the German Shepard fellow.

a simple test is to take a lil slice of and taste test for bitterness. not bitter= no mescaline

Interesting, I didn't realize there was such confusion between the two species. There certainly is a lot of variation even between the pics we've posted above. I'm definitely not enough of an expert to say whether they are or aren't torches.

I will say that I noticed significant variation in potency when bioassaying BBB's 'torches' in the past. Strong effects were experienced on a couple occasions while on a couple other occasions the same quantity only yielded threshold effects. I assumed at the time this was just due to natural variation, as I understand individual specimens can vary quite a lot. Every one I tasted was bitter however.

Couldn't bitterness be from alkaloids present other than mescaline as well?

I don't how to go about properly ID'ing these guys but I guess an extraction would at least give an idea about their potency.

Ive herd that one way of telling if its cuzco is if the central spine is swollen at the base. Maybe those cuzco that look like peruvianus are really hybrids of them both. That will explain the mesc levels or activeness. Smile

I really try hard not to pick favorites among my plants since I feel they can sense this or at the very least it does effect growth in my 8 years of gardening. BUT i love... this Cactus.. I got it from Zircon6 on EBAY. Its grown from wild seed harvested in the Andes Mtn. It really brings that far off mountain range feel to my kitchen HEH.

If someone has some ..[sanpedro macho]..it looks much like T.peruvianus.[torch cacti]..and it is closly related to the strain..and nearly as potent as torch ..and easier to find at cacti farms..
Any photos of ..sanpedro macho..please post!Smile

There are a few people who believe this cacti of mine could be T. Macho, it was labelled T. Peruvianus but i think its T. Cuzcoensis

I think this one may be a weathered peruvianus. Ive gotten san pedro with similar look, loght green and long spines. Wait to see the new growth by the end of the summer. Then lets see some pics. Ill say its a beautiful peruvianus/ macrogonus
