Mushrooms for Migraine and Other Healing; Wanted or Not Options

In my intro, I discussed how I came to DMT as a migraine remedy, and how well it worked for me as an abortive treatment. Since researching more about tryptamine treatment for migraine, I discovered that the gold-standard of migraine treatment seems to be psilocybin. Since it not only has abortive properties but in some cases quite profound prophylactic properties, with many migraineurs reporting from two to six months of migraine free life between trips.

I have done psilocybe mushrooms several times in the past, my first experience with psychedelics coming from a large dose of fresh psilocybe cyanescens.

There was a gap of around twenty years between my doing any psychedelics and a cubensis trip I had about two years ago that was pleasant.

A few months back I started growing Golden Teachers using the PF, brown-rice flour and vermiculite method. I harvested early this week, and yesterday I woke with a migraine and decided to dose four grams (dry).

I chose this dose based on the 3 gram dose that went well a few years back, and the possibility that I had developed some cross tolerance from using the DMT as an abortive about a week prior.

I was in increasing pain as I was trying to get my milligram scale to weight he mushrooms. It was giving me error messages for a long time until I got it balanced enough. It won't work unless nearly perfectly level. I was finally able to calibrate, and even though the temperature was correct, it was counting backwards and then shutting down when it got to zero, even when I added weight to it. Finally I got it when it was being somewhat stable to weigh out my dose.

About a half hour after eating them, I noticed a reduction in the pain, and a bluish cast to the shadows that has been a visual sign that I always have had with psilocybe mushrooms.

In about an hour the pain was gone and I had mild closed eye visuals.

In about two hours, I was enjoying the visuals as despite their mild nature, persisted longer then low dose DMT visuals.

Three hours after dosing, I started having a more difficult time.

Curiosity got the best of me in the past regarding breakthrough DMT as some higher than needed doses have given me amazing visuals and experiences. Last month I had a breakthrough doses of vaporized DMT. I found the experience confusing, amazing, profound, somewhat disturbing, ineffable, and very brief.

At this time (about three hours after dosing) there was a rustling in the window sill and a baby opossum fell into the house. I removed one and reunited it with it's mother recently. I wasn't really in the frame of mind to deal with it, I have no idea if it was the same one, but I picked it up and put it outside, the poor thing was terrified.

This was my first mushroom trip since breaking through on DMT, and I was aware that this changed everything. It was able to bring back some of the 'repressed' DMT experience.

As I approached the fourth hour I was fully peaking. I had difficulty with concepts such as time and decades, or places, I wasn't sure that California for example actually existed, or if it was mythical, despite having been there. Air travel, cars, computers, technology, my education in electronics and math all began to confuse me. The stores I shop in physically or order from online seemed improbable. The distinction between different people or species, also seemed to make less sense. I could rationally know that this must be so, but I had a strong intuitive sense that it was all hallucination, and I was still back in the place I was on my first DMT breakthrough.

It is hard to explain in words why such simple concepts were giving me such trouble, but I knew I would be better off not getting caught in a thought loop, so I decided to listen to some relaxing music, but hard a hard time getting lost in the music, which is a very strange thing for me, particularly on psychedelics. Happy music seemed to abrasive, and mellow music brought me into existential contemplation I wasn't wanting to deal with.

I called a few friends to have conversation to help ground me, most were at work, as I called in sick for work, luckily I was able to call someone who wasn't in class at the moment. The conversation helped, and afterwards, I decided to do some internet searching on the combination of psilocybin and kava, and found no contraindication. I drank some kava and the thoughts focused more on things I could change in my life that were broken.

I contacted a few people today to bury old hatchets, and gave up on some hatred that had been burrowing in me for more then a decade.

This experience was not what I would call a bad trip. I was never quite freaked, and a lot of it was very enjoyable. It is just the first time that I have experienced a long period of anxiety on psychedelics; even LSD. Also, my first mushroom trip comforted me existentially as I learned that time wasn't linear outside of normal consciousness. I wasn't expecting discomfort in that regard, anxiety of the unknown being a theme of a lot of yesterday's trip. I wasn't expecting as much of a focusing on more concrete things in my life that were in need of attention either.

It has only been a day, I hope the migraine prophylaxis works, it would definitely be worthwhile to take a trip like that every two to six months if it will keep me from developing a migraine or cluster. (I've had both)

I did a lot of knocking on wood.

In the future I think I will dose purely prophylactically, and not while actively suffering migraine pain. This was a bad set to start things off with for a trip as long as mushrooms. I think painless, meditated, and relaxed to begin with would be a better plan.

Well. I remember you taking these in chat that day. I am glad your pain was reduced by taking the mushrooms.

I am curious to see if a smaller dose, for example a gram, would relieve the pain just as nicely but not give you a deep trip like 4 grams would.

Just my opinion. Glad it works for the headaches though!

One week later, and I unfortunately woke with a migraine. DMT cleared it up though. The psilocybin seemed to be trying to work, perhaps I need a larger or maybe smaller dose, or just a few more trips, or a different strain.

Sorry to hear that the mushrooms didn't work prophylactically. I've had great success with using mushrooms as a preventative measure against migraines and cluster headaches. Salvia divinorum also, but I don't think that's typical for many people. I seem to be one of the only people that uses Salvia in that way Smile

For me, a relatively high dosage of mushrooms will keep any sort of attack away for at least two months. I tend to take fairly large dosages when I'm using them as a prophylactic treatment. A "better safe than sorry" strategy, and also the fact that I enjoy the psychedelic experience so much anyway Thumbs up IME, the dosage is the key rather than specific strains.

Because mushrooms, Salvia, and LSA work so well at keeping the horrific pain away, I have yet to try DMT as an abortive. I simply do not allow myself to get to the point where I have to suffer through even a mild migraine. I've had more than my share of pain in the past and I don't wish to experience it again if I can help it. Changing my diet has helped tremendously as well. I have certain triggers that I now recognize and need to avoid.

Also, thank you for sharing the experience with us. It sounds very much like when I first began using psilocybin as a treatment for my cluster headaches/migraines. I didn't always want to have those kinds of insights and thoughts about my life and the world I was living in, but it all ended up for the best. An unintended "side effect" of pain treatment, but always affecting positive change.
