Salvia d. seeds are as rare as the proverbial rocking horse shit.

Salvia d. flowers seem to have their anatomy wrong and left to their own devices they almost never pollinate themselves because of their weird anatomy, I think they must have an insect (possibly a moth with a long tongue) in their natural environment that is missing in most parts of the world. So seeds only normally form on hand pollinated flowers.

In the rare cases where they do form seeds many of them are not viable and those that are only remain viable for a very short time.

Cuttings are the best way to go.

I cant remember where but there's a guy who grew salvia seeds all the time.
Very few of them where viable though.
The trick is lighting and hand pollination.
I think you have to follow a strict lighting pattern in the same way as you do with
cannabis. F ex, 12h lights off, 12h on etc without much light bleeding into the dark
period.

...I'll see if I can find him and see if my memory is correct.

Edit: Found it!

That lighting scheme sounds about right, 12 on -12 off.

Mine flower every year outside with natural lighting about a month after the autumn equinox, so it seems like they are triggered into flowering by photoperiod. There is a drop in temps around that time so that could be a factor too. By the time the flowers are ready for pollination the daylength is down to about 11 hours.

We normally have a wet winter, so by the time the flowers have matured & I've pollinated them the wet conditions tend to cause me a lot of problems in getting the seeds to mature without the flowers rotting or just falling off in the wind.

I really need a greenhouse.

Does anyone know what happened to seamac - the guy from the link imPsimom posted above ?
He dropped off the scene a few years ago & I never heard from him again.

Well, you can ask about viable seeds. I see the seeds appears on stock.
If you're up for it, might be worth a shot. I think it's good some poeple do pollinate them.

Keep us updated about the viability of the seeds.
If you go ahead, please make a grow log, with pictures.

I will be doing exactly this myself with some recently acquired SD seeds. I have 10 tries to get one to sprout and survive, let's hope it works. It feels like I've only been waiting forever for this chance. Smile
