Hey all! I've been a lurker on the nexus for a while, and I've been an avid explore of the spice dimensions. I have a quick little question for you all. I've been researching the topic of psychedelics, anthropology, psychology, and theology for an extended period of time now, and I recently stumbled across this absurdly expensive book called Psychedelic Anthropology: The Study of Man Through the Manifestation of the Mind.
I have never heard of it until now, and I can't seem to find much info on it. I did a little research on the author (Allan D Coult), but I didn't find anything too revealing. Apparently this book caused quite a stir in the academic community.
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here has read it, or knows where I could get a copy (physical or digital) for less than a few hundred dollars. This seems like quite the work and I'm astonished I've never even seen it pop up in all the time I've been exploring this field of study.

But first, are you experienced?

Interesting...

I found an abstract from a paper discussing the premises of this book.

Quote:
Through an analysis and interpretation of various mythological and symbolic systems, Allan Coult, in his textbook Psychedelic Anthropology, has defined a universal mechanism for the experience of various levels of consciousness. He has systematically categorized these mental and physiological states and proposes that the experience of them gives rise to specific symbolism and symbolic systems. In other words, these symbols can be correlated with and are a direct result and manifestation of the experience of these given states of consciousness. (page 1)

No wonder this type of thing could cause an academic stir in 1966 (Coulter died in 1970). According to the idea, hyperspace doesn't reproduce cultural symbols, it's culture that picks from hyperspace.

I'm leaving attached a review of the book published in the Phoenix Journal of Transpersonal Anthropology in 1979.

If I am not mistaken this should be it. Glanced over it and looks like quite an interesting read.

This is fantastic, thank you. Very good reading so far, definitely seems like something many of the naysayers on the Nexus board should try to wrap their heads around.

Excellent reading material so far. I was growing tired of the Unabombers 112 page Manifesto.

I'm 3 chapters in, and I'm being strung along pleasantly so far.

Just got done reading it. It's definitely a bit dense. Would have to read and re-read a paragraph several times to make sure I was following as accurately as I could, all the while trying to relate what he's saying to personal experience. I thought the book was fantastic. Although a lot of the material wasn't brand spanking new, the way it was all put together and presented....it was just like all these mini-epiphanies in each chapter. Coult adds a whole new layer (for me at least) in regards to connecting all the pieces to this big mystery of life. I wish the guy were alive right now so I could write him!
