ok guys, first post on any forum. forgive me for shortfalls!

just outside my house i found what appears to be a large group of liberty caps. a couple of things are putting me off IDing them completley.

firstly they were en masse, im talking a hundered at least grouped together in bunches of about 5 in no more than a metre area.

secondly, these are huge! most are around 30mm accross the cap.

the ground is short grass shaded by one or two trees, cant id the tree atm. a couple hundred pidgeons frequent the area every day so im guessing thats where the fert could come from.

positive id so far: definite nipple to all, chestnut colour and striations showing placement of gills through cap, cap edge towards gills is rough and broken. long slender white stems, dark black spore prints.

so far ive found none to bruise blue, a little disconcerting

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated, ive dried them so they should keep a while

β€œThe most compelling insight of that day was that this awesome recall had been brought about by a fraction of a gram of a white solid, but that in no way whatsoever could it be argued that these memories had been contained within the white solid. Everything I had recognized came from the depths of my memory and my psyche. I understood that our entire universe is contained in the mind and the spirit. We may choose not to find access to it, we may even deny its existence, but it is indeed there inside us, and there are chemicals that can catalyze its availability.”

Sorry, but those belong to the genus Coprinellus.
Not active.

Well coprinellus grow abundantly almost everywhere.
They also grow in dense clusters like your picture.
And they can vary in size from small to large, unlike liberty caps which stay fairly small.

But to be honest, after you spot certain mushrooms enough times, you just know by the way they look.
But please don't infer that with experience you can bypass proper identification.
Some mushrooms have deadly lookalikes and some don't.
If you're unsure of you find, contact an expert.
If they're unsure, then throw it out.

There are plenty of great mycology forums online that have experts who are eager to identify fungi for you.

What's funny is I had a dream last night that I found tons of the biggest liberty caps I'd ever seen! I was so disappointed when I woke up....Sad

I usually start having shroomy dreams this time of yearBig grin

Oh, and second on the ID, sorry they weren't the mother-lode of libbys!
