its sad so many who drink tap water assume the whole flouride thing is just new age hookus pookus.. when really there has been many studies done on it, and even its negative affects on the pineal glands of mammals

fluoride and bone cancer

papers on fluoride and the pineal

<Ringworm>hehehe, it's all fun and games till someone loses an "I"

The people who say this kind of thing are usually the people claiming the evil government puts it in the water with the intent of mind control or to harm the public. Fluoride having negative heath consequences is understandable -- it's the bogus new age claims of some grand CT that are hookus pookus.

I've installed a reverse osmosis machine under my sink. Love it. Drink a glass of tap water, then drink a glass of RO water, and try going back to tap. I can taste all kinds of junk in tap water, and I live in a city that's in the top ten in the U.S. for pure tap water.

When I lived in southern California, which I grew up in, the tap was beyond drinkable: white flaky crap floating in the water, a rotten egg smell. Gross.

simplest solution is a brita filter. it's basically a chromatography column with activated carbon and ion-exchange resin

^^Not according to their website.Reverse osmosis and an activated alumina filter are allegedly 90ish% effective.

It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.

Dunno - to me the taste of plastic is more objectionable than the taste of chlorinated drinking water, and probably at least as probable to have health consequences.

Brita filters do nothing to remove fluoride. The RO machine is expensive, but I was lucky enough to get one for free (a friend, maddeningly, had an unopened RO machine sitting unused for years before I just said, "Dude, give me that thing, you're never going to use it!" It worked, it's mine now, ha ha ha! I might also score a sensory deprivation tank for the same reason. I don't get how someone could have such cool, useful things and just be too lazy to assemble it.) .

get a filter with alumina and silica (fluoride is an anion).
it will still be way cheaper than reverse-osmosis. we use them in the lab for deionizing water from tap.

brita filters are crap. If you really want a good filter get a zeolite filter.

wanna see my water Smile

Here is a pic to 2 different spots right near me that are clean pure artesian springs. The first one is public access with a pipe put in and the second is a few minues away from the same aquafer..a truely wild spring bubbling right from the ground. This one is my personal spring I dont think others know about. I only drink from the source.

Flouridated water has been banned in the EU pretty much. America has a lot of catching up to do!

zeolite is what I described. aluminosilicate filter. add activated carbon, and it traps nonpolars by virtue of van der waals interactions.

Ah, no fair! I'd post a picture of my closest water source, but if you can imagine the diarrhea of a 50 year old alcoholic, that's pretty much what it looks like.

Funny, you know not all reticulated water is as bad as this thread makes out. I have visited our local water treatment facility and it's not as scary as you would think. I definitely recommend a visit if you can arrange one. (Makes for a great school excursion - suggest it and offer to come a long as a parent helper!)

Here the process is, water from a forested catchment - coagulant (alum) added, filtered, neutralised with NaOH, Cl gas added. That's it. For some reason fluoridation by district is at the discretion of some or other bureaucrat and our supply is not fluoridated.

We don't like the Cl, so we have a water filter (stainless steel housing, not plastic). Put it in to keep bacteria at bay in transit, filter it out at the end, sounds fine to me. In my view, much much better than the alternative some choose of drinking water stored in plastic for long intervals, containing plastic monomers that are potentially endocrine-mimicking or with other nasty traits.

"coagulant (alum) added, filtered, neutralised with NaOH, Cl gas added"

Really?... You actaully concider that not bad? Chlorine gas..alum..not that bad? You think it is normal to drink chlorine?

Okay..I understand what you are saying(sort of)..but you yourself say you dont like the chlorine and have to filter it yourself..which would tell me the water IS that bad..with all the taxes people pay city and municipal drinking water should be clean from the tap as it is. Noone should have to buy all kinds of filters to drink the water they pay for with taxes to be certified healthy to drink already.

Common impurities in average tap water:
Chlorine,
Lead,
Aluminum,
Copper,
Calcium,
Phosphates,
Nitrates,
Sodium,
Fluoride,
Radium
Arsenic.

The water isn't good just because it's clear.
