Etching can occur with multiple uses. I'd get some borosillicate glass which is resistant to etching and meant to be used in chemistry. blooooooOOOOOooP fzzzzzzhm KAPOW! This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. Grow a plant or something and meditate on that

Ok, I will try and find a seal-able jar that is made from borosillicate.
Thanks.

I never had a jar break on me, but did have the lids of jars lose their seal. I just use pickle jars as they are cheap and easily replaceable. Just noticed you have to clean them good after you get the pickles out, other wise the smell sometimes stays with the jars. Also I clean the jars after immediately after use to prolong the life of them.

i had a jar break once... since then i've always mixed my lye & h20 in a 1000ml pyrex measuring cup, then transferred it to a jar when it's mixed & ready for rootbark... haven't had any problems since... spinning a set the stars through which the tattered tales of axis roll about the waxen wind of never set to motion in the unbecoming round about the reason hardly matters nor the wise through which the stars were set in spin...

I have 1/2 gallon mason jars I have been using for 3+ years. They are still going strong. Ice House is an alter ego. May I ask what were the conditions when your jar broke? i.e. was it just sitting there, were you actively mixing, was it used jar, Any idea how many times it was used. Thanks. Ray

it was a used jar... i had mixed lye & water in it, then rootbark, then heptane for 2 pulls... this had been done successfully twice... the third time was a charm, and as i was shaking/mixing the lye & water it broke over the sink... made me damn glad i was wearing gloves, & convinced me that picking up a set of goggles was reasonable behavior... broken glass & lye water flying everywhere = no.fucking.bueno... & it's worth noting that the jar i was using was not a nice, Indiana made quality mason jar... it was a cheap knock off (not Ball brand) that i picked up at a dollar store... that may be the rub... spinning a set the stars through which the tattered tales of axis roll about the waxen wind of never set to motion in the unbecoming round about the reason hardly matters nor the wise through which the stars were set in spin...

been using the same wine bottle for years with no issue. never understood why so many choose jars, much easier to retrieve solvent from a long neck wine bottle. i can pull everything but a few ML out with ease, and the glass on a wine bottle is much thicker than a mason jar typically.

I think the shaking of the jar may have been why it broke. The jar probably built up too much pressure from doing this, this is why just stir in the lye slowing (usually about 10mg at a time, until it dissolves as I continually stir it).
