Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world...

- William Butler Yeats

I'm not really worried about this forum, but more about other websites. Twice in the last two days I've gone back to look at websites that caught my attention a couple months ago, only to find them gone, their domains expired. One of them I'd already saved to my hard drive for future reference, the other I had not... and while I was able to find that latter site in google's cache, the images had not been preserved and the formatting hadn't been preserved.

I guess the lesson is that when you find a website you'd like to reference later, always save a copy. Any browser can save the html and images, but I prefer using a PDF printer (like PDFCreator) so the content isn't spread across several files... it also has the advantage of letting you save files that a server will only allow you to view, but not download.

Funny how digital data can seem so permanent, yet at the same time so fleeting.

Oh yeah, for some time now I have the habit of saving to the hard disk any web articles that I find interesting. Not just that, youtube videos too, for instance.

At some point I realized maybe 15% of my favorites were gone, either because the user was banned, shut account down, video was taken down because of the music being played, etc. So I started converting youtube videos to mp3/4/avi/mpg too.

What do you use for the youtube conversions?

For people who are downloading the complete DMT-Nexus site: DO IT SLOWLY!

If you are collecting too fast or with too many connections you might trigger one or more of the anti-DDoS precautions, and that in turn might result in you being kicked from the DMT-Nexus server.

So better keept it slow but surely.

Kind regards,

The Traveler

greasemonkey app for firefox will prop up a dl link to any youtube video and allow you to get it in mp4 format. Most reg files are 15-20 megs some lower . http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/33042

Used to go with zamzar.com, but more recently clipconverter.cc has been a better option. Works like a charm!
