open or closed containers to air when letting sit? Options

when letting something sit for 24 hours in a vessel to either basify or separate, for sake of argument lets say peruvian in hcl/xylene, is it best to leave the container open to air, or closed?

closed...you dont want the solvent to evap

Really!? Glad I asked, i was leaning 88.92% towards open because i thought reactions need oxygen, that in a closed container compression would slow things.

Is that totally wrong?
