ok so I am not sure if anyone here will be able to help me or not..but maybe someone can.

I have been building skimboards for a number of years now..these are high quality skimboards and not the cheap walmart boards etc..since in the skimboard industry there is a lack of sustainable skimboard technolgies, compared to the surf industry where hollow core wood and solid balsa boards with green or "entropy resins" and epoxies are more and more common, I have started riding wood boards again alot and shaping some...but they are heavy...

I want to shape a replica of my foam core wave skimboard from wood, but for obvious reasons when riding waves and not sandbars you need alot of float, so I am going to attempt to get into using hollow core surf construction designs for my skimboard..the thing is alot of them use these natural or eco friendly resins..and I want to try them out as well but I know nothing about them.

I am most familiar with working with polyester resins and fiberglass cloth..I am looking for a more sustainable green resin(s) that will work well with fiberglass cloth, as well as maybe even other types of cloth. I have heard that some people have used a hemp weave cloth on boat, sailboard, surfboard constuction but I cant find alot of info on it..has anyone here ever worked with these industrially or otherwise?

That's cool that you make skimboards, a ton of people down where I live ride, I think the hemp cloth idea is the answer, but i am not familiar with it.

hmm, ok so I know absolutely nothing about this topic... but ive just had a quick thoughts that may be of interest...

I have recently moved to a rural area quite near to some of the best surf beaches in the country. I have been thinking quite a bit about surfing and crafting my own boards... Using eco-resins would be an ideal method to enhance traditional techniques...

have you thought about utilizing hemp resin? ... im personally not familiar with hemp cloth construction but I have seen many products manufactured with hemp resin and the potential of this substance is amazing... although it is generally expensive...

just a thought, hope it is usefull... I look forward to seeing how this thread develops

Pleased

I have never seen hemp resisn..just hemp cloth..if you really want to build your own surfboard you will probabily want to buy at least a cheap used one first..if you are on the coast they should be everywhere once you start to look..otherwise it will be kinda tough to shape the rails properly if you have nothing to go on and dont really know how they should look.

You can look into hollow surf construction, or chambered board constuction..if you want to shape with foam you can use either order a blank to shape..or you can shape your own EPS foam from homedepot or whereever else you can find the stuff..check sites like "swaylocks" etc for more on shapong surfboards..if you do try this please post pictures throughout the process!

Shaping a hollow core wood replica of my 7 foot semi gun surfboard is something I want to try eventually.

It would also be a good idea to go out and either rent a few diff boards to try them out..or buy a cheap used one at first so you can figure out what you want to ride..I basically went right to short boards after 1 or 2 days on a longboard becasue I had been snowboarding for so long so it just felt right..some people like longboards or funboards more though. It all depends..
Long live the unwoke.
