Making music - downloadable software Options

Can someone help me? I am looking for a decent free down-loadable sowftware program that I can use to make some music. I am not a hardcore music maker in any way, but I would like something to play around with, whilst tripping and whatnot. I have roamed the web, but I simply don't know what to trust.

I would like to make some psychedelic/trance (or even simpler) type music and be able to save it to my computer. Don't worry, I will never subject the general public to the music that I create, I would just like to entertain myself. So, if anybody knows a link to some free downloadable music software...please post it here. A million "thank you"s in advance. Smile

I don't like FL at all...the interface is a pain in the ass.

I recommend Reason. Because it's logic, you see all the synths, effects, and other devices. So you turn the knobs to tweak the parameters, as easy as that.

Problem is it isn't for free...

You could always get a torrent of reason, can get ableton to or most things for that matter. Re-wiring reason into ableton then you have the best of both worlds. Try before you buy I say, and one day I will buy ableton! There's tons of free vst instruments out there too. A really easy to use simple program is nanostudio

Renoise is pretty simple, good for making complex line by line edits. Id say perfect for psytrance or simerlar. Theres a good demo and its relatively cheap to get the full version.

Reason is also good, but it is all 'in the box' so to speak. Reason doesn't allow you to use external instruments or VST plugins (vst is the standard plugin format). Although it does allow 'rewire' whch connects it to specific programs, such as... most of the top DAW's

Ableton Live is functional, easy to use and adaptable to almost any set up/input/output config. You can DJ with it, produce music with it, make mixes and route and record live jams. Tho its certainly not free, there is a trial version.

FL studio, Cubase, and Logic i cannot comment on. Tho im sure almost every DAW (digital Audio Workstation) can do 90% of the things very other DAW can. They all have strength and weaknesses.

Im afraid i dont know many free programs. I hope this helps.

Lavos is a fictional character, a dream inside a dream. Don't take what he says to be true or representational of reality in any known form. He is inspired by pure fantasy.

If you insist on a free solution, have a look at Jeskola Buzz.

A friend of mine made some awesome trance tracks with this software... If you have the talent, you can do anything with it.
