Are you having trouble using coffee filters?
Are you tired of coffee filters that fold inward when you pour in the liquid?
Do you hate it when the coffee filter tears and all plant material falls through? Then worry no longer.
The Funnel is the answer to all your problems Wink

The Funnel

How to build a funnel
1) take an empty 1L HDPE bottle.
2) cut off the bottom. Use knife.
3) cut off a piece of about 2 inch. Open this piece by use of scissor.
4) remaining funnel should be about 6 inch

How to use the funnel
1) gently push coffee filter in funnel. Typical s-shape will form

2) take opened 2 inch piece of bottle. Pinch this piece so that the ends will overlap and the diameter will shrink.
3) gently push pinched piece in funnel. Release tension so that it pushes the coffee filter against surface of funnel.

4) slowly pour in liquid to be filtered. Pour into the side of funnel, dont pour into middle.

This setup will support the coffee filter so that it will not easily tear apart. The pinched piece will prevent the filter from folding inwards, during pouring. The piece can be removed when all the liquid has been poured in. The filter will remain stuck to the sides of the funnel. Beforehand one could put cotton wool in the bottleneck for extra support of the filter, and extra filtering.

Of course you can use the piece of plastic that comes with your coffee machine. But it might not be HDPE of PP. Or maybe one just doesnt want to pour solvents through the piece that is used for coffee also. Or maybe it simply doesn’t fit on top of the container wherein one wishes to collect the filtered solution. In these cases the improvised funnel could be useful.
