How bout the movie Stay - Is this reality just a flashback created by random firing neurons creating characters picked up by my visual cortex of the people around me, while I am dying?

Anyone ever see "the forgotten"? I just saw a preview for it and it looks like a film that belongs in this thread:

"What if they told you that everything you remember was just a dream".

I'll have to check it out!

JBArk
JBArk is a Mandelthought; a non-fiction character in a drama of his own design he calls "LIFE" who partakes in consciousness expanding activities and substances; he should in no way be confused with SWIM, who is an eminently data-mineable and prolific character who has somehow convinced himself the target he wears on his forehead is actually a shield.

I only have one recommendation that hasn't been mentioned yet.
2001: A Space Odyssey, has everything to do with DMT and almost gives you the meaning of life in just over 2 hours.
BTW, if you have seen it already make sure to watch the youtube video 2001 Echoes. Its a sync of Pink Floyd's song Echoes to the final scene of 2001. This may be hard to find on youtube due to copyright, but its easy to set up. Just start the song on the final chapter "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite"

I recently rewatched Contact and kept thinking how easily the 'trip scene' and everything that is said about it could 1-to-1 be used for a dmt experience as well. Really liked thinking of it that way. Sorry if this has already been mentioned in the thread Smile It's just such a good movie!

this is more alternative realities in the minds of people, but what the heck

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind Travel through someones mind and his attempts to save it, although the intro is quite slow and confusing

Sucker Punch presents a dream within a dream within a dream, triggered through traumatic experience

shutter island elaborate story in the mind of a schizophrenic

The matrix gets presented more in detail in the anime movie from the animatrix collection

the second renaissance

Speaking of Kaufman (^^^) i can't believe I forgot "SYNECDOCHE NEW YORK" !! A story about a theater director who mounts a play about his own life, in which the character representing him mounts a play within the play about his own life, in which the character representing him mounts... Things get awfully tangled in the plays within plays within plays, until we're no longer sure what is the play(s) and what is reality.

Great title too: clearly a play on the existing city Shenectady, "synecdoche" means to mistake the part for the whole.

More accurately, it means:

Part of something is used to refer to the whole thing (pars pro toto), or
A thing (a "whole"Pleased is used to refer to part of it (totum pro parte), or
A specific class of thing is used to refer to a larger, more general class, or
A general class of thing is used to refer to a smaller, more specific class, or
A material is used to refer to an object composed of that material, or
A container is used to refer to its contents.

The film is also Kaufman's directorial debut!

has anyone mentioned Inception yet?! A dream within a dream within a dream, layers of concioussness, the minds prison etc...

Cool Runnings - bobsledding in JAMAICA?! C'mon!

Fear and Loathing - a distorted view of reality through the eyes of two highly psychedelicised reprobates.
Lose Control, Free My Soul, Break Me Open, Make Me Whole.

The Big Lebowski, man.

Maude Lebowski: What do you do for recreation?

Wow, so many great films here. And, so many more to check out...

Absolutely loved Waking Life (and Linklater's other live animated flick A Scanner Darkly which could fit here as well). A lot of these films try pretty hard, and some succeed better than others. The Fountain is a pretty valiant attempt. Less successful, but still not mentioned yet would be What Dreams May Come, the painting reality scene alone is worth the price of admission.

I don't think anyone mentioned Alice In Wonderland yet... the Disney animated version is still my fav.

Michel Gondry's The Science Of Sleep from 2006 {La science des rêves original French title} surely deserves to be here. Eternal Sunshine Made the list, but this one is at least as trippy.

Dragon Hunters the 2008 CGI one {original title Chasseurs de dragons} is not entirely successful, but it has its serious otherworldly moments, and captures the mania of psychedelic dreamtime rather well.

Thanks for this thread, JBark. As a fellow screenwriter and novelist, I say the more films like this out there the better. I'm sure more flix will occur to me if I think about it.

[EDIT: Just watched Coraline based on the recommendations here... dug it. Thanks everyone!]

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." ~ Buddha

A new one, though not exactly "alternate reality":

TRANSFER

A german flick that deals with a new technology capable of "transferring" one consciousness into another body.

Let me know what you think!

Bon Cinema!

A pretty contorted movie...
