Lye is dangerous, but in the UK anyone can pick it up from pretty much any DIY shop (hardware store) with no problems. I even see it sold in my local pharmacy! Strange how something that can potentially be really dangerous is so easily available. I guess the laws are slightly different in the UK when regarding caustic soda.
