This is good, these are all artists that I have never heard of (with the exception of Dj Vladim). Just listened to a bit of DJ Shadow. He is quite good, however from the few songs I listened to I felt that he was a little bit heavy for me. Great artist though.


They are not underrated where I live, most of my friends really enjoy them. I just don't have any time for them.

i've been paying attention to hip-hop since 1984, and i'd have to agree with these ppl commenting on this mix... probably the best mix ever; highlights the current wave (third), 1999-2009.

for those who dig jazzy hip-hop, check out J-Rocc's Blue Note mix on percussionlab; you'll hear where all the familiar golden era hip-hop tracks got their samples from.

I do not believe it is fair to call alot of the new popular rap stupid mayn.

To me listening to some of 50 cen'ts stuff is like watching an action movie with amazing music.

Although if you want to hear a popular rapper that sings about more than just the gangster way of life I would suggest listening to Eminems music. His rhymes are sick. Alot of his songs are about his past life/ Alot arnt . He puts in alot of humor if you listen close enough. Idk. Give him a chance. But I'll always be his most psychedelic fan ! later

His latest album was about rehab which I found coincidental. Although I didn't like that album as much as some of his older stuff, his rhymes just weren't as good. Aparently he went to brighton also

I loved Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind ft. Alicia Keys" Alicia's part is great mix to jay's softer tone. Yeah its got some gangster refrenses. I watched a few great movies based in New York always made me want to live there some day. This song drove it home for me mayn someday I will live in New York.

A lot of the popular artists you may be refering to have changed their style over the years. Some artists still spittin today are appreciated more for their new stuff than their old stuff. Don't judge a book by its cover ya know what I mean.

i disagree (jay-z is weak, 50 is a tool, etc.), but to each his/her own.

MF Doom has some awesome lyrics, but his flow can be subpar and the way he conducts his live shows is pretty unfortunate. I've read about him sending some clown in a Doom mask and when people complained about the dude lip-synching, saying "Sure MF Doom was at the show, he's a character I created."

that being said, these other clowns who have the corporate money to dump on choreography
and slutty outfits for dancers, doesn't necessarily reflect talent, but it's more of a facade that bastardizes the art
to make it more palatable for mainstream audiences.

jay-z is my favorite target; there's nothing new or clever about rapping about getting out the ghetto and making riches because of corporate sponsorship or payola.

pure hip-hop has been/always will be about rapping about styles; slick flow, witty allegories, and wordplay.

I really like Saul Williams, but I don't think of him as strictly hip hop. He's a rapper for sure though none the less.

Saul is a spoken word artist, sort of like Jello Biafra, but more traditionally rooted in hip-hop. Jello has been in numerous acts, and is originally from the Dead Kennedys.

I like Saul. Never heard him till now. He's got the flow along with meaning.

Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow do it for me now. I've still got a soft spot for Ice Cube, PE etc...Beasties. Nothing wrong with Hip Hop, although most of what you hear on the radio, like everything else the record companies force on the FM band and video channels is...well...garbage. You have to really search every genre of music to find the pearls, they are there.

the most talented artists aren't on network tv or radio, unless it's college or independent radio.

american music awards is a joke, and sony music is weak sausage. if some of you honestly believe Jay-Z, or the now self-proclaimed "greatest mc", little wayne, are the best rappers out there, then you really have a limited scope on this genre.
