I often see posts from 'Coatl under 'Active discussions', but when I click in, nothing is to be found. What is up? Did I mistakenly set the poor fella on ignore? Or maybe all his or hers posts have to be accepted by a moderator before shown to the public? Or perhaps there are a completely different answer?

Basically all of coatl's posts need to be approved by a moderator before they appear on the forum. When coatl posts something in a thread, his name will appear as if he's posted but his post won't be shown prior to approval.
