Performing an extraction in PVC container? Options

Anyone done this? I've been looking at various new containers and i know HDPE plastic is best but thats only ever translucent (usually opaque). Was just wondering if it was possible to use PVC/LDPE or any other clear plastic you get can? I could use glass but i've heard some people have problems with that too.

Thanks in advance

swim doesnt know about pvc, swim wouldnt mess with it though. Cant go wrong with a big ol' pickle jar for a few bucks. If your worried about the glass breaking, toss it after your done with your extraction.

swim has tried PVC and the bottle melted and buckled when he added NaOH - seemed to hold up when the mix cooled down (transferred to another bottle) but swim wouldn't recommend it. Just use milk jugs HDPE or glass.

Right, took ur advice. No PVC. i've got some 2 litre jars but they have the metal hinge and vaccum thing. I think that the rubber would disolve though? if not can i just get a big glass screw top jar? would like a 2 litre container though...

thanks for ur advice btw!

edit: The reason i'm not sure is because the term "mason jars" etc etc is not really used in england and loads of people say different things so i thought i'd ask indefinetly.

Good to see that people do ask such questions and do not make themselves victims of the (as Noman once put it) "psychedelic Darwinism"!

The solvents might dissolve the rubber vacuum thing. The screw on top glass jars work good for an extraction or 2. Im telling you man, big ass pickle jars, there like 3 bucks, and youll have enough pickles to last you a few months lol.

I used a plastic still water bottle once and that showed no signs of degredation, including the rubber seal. However I wouldn't do this by choice and now I ony use HDPE bottles. The whole time the stuff was in there I was very anxious, especially as I leave it for a week soaking before pulling, all the time of which it spent sitting in the sink, just in case.

But that worked out fine in the add. If you must do this be very careful when adding lye, because if it clumps together it WILL melt.

Solvents most probably corrode them over many uses but looking at seals that have been used multiple times with naptha there is nothing noticeable. Probably best not to get the solvent on the seal too much though. You can get replacement seals if you notice them degrading.

I'm not so sure about contact with NaOH.

A thick plastic bottle works fine for a few uses. I've never had issues with them unless you leave your mix for a month or so you're asking for trouble. Then again this is for small mixes - 1.3L - 80g mhrb.

HDPE bottles are perfect or PE if the task doesnt involve heating above say 80c
