A/B
question about the boil Options

Although SWIM's planning on an STB as his first extraction, he was reading up on some threads on A/B and wondered: during the boil one can use vinegar. Is this the vinegar one uses to whip up a salad dressing or is it the vinegar cleaning ladies use to clean windows? SWIM wants to know because he has a bottle of household vinegar under his sink wich explicitly says it's not meant for consumption, but it smells identical to the one he cooks with.

I guess you could sum up SWIM's question as: is the difference between these two liquids similar to the food/technical grade distinction in other chemicals?

Yeah, stick with food grade whenever possible.

None of the acid will come over in your final product (it all gets neutralized by the base and forms salts), but better safe than sorry I guess.

I am certifiably insane, as such all posts written by me should be regarded as utter nonsense or attempts to get attention.

I don't know SWIM and personally don't trust him at all. If SWIM is posting, most likely I will not respond...as I said, I don't trust the guy. YOU I trust, but never SWIM.

Distilled malt aka White Vinegar is what I used. Available at all good supermarkets I would think.

i use vinegar as well, nice you can boil down your solution to reduce it's volume without the PH lowering, as the vineger acid is volotile enough to boil off as you go...

Are you sure that's really true? The water and acetic acid evaporate AT THE SAME RATE?

That's a good q. SWIMFRIEND. No, I think it's got a higher BP than water. But, by experience I've reduced the volume of my acid solutions CONSIDERABLY when using vinegar with only marginally effecting the PH. Not so with HCL.

^^^Do you mean that the HCL is boiled off quicker than vinegar?
