You have to be brain dead if you can enjoy this imo.

Rolling eyes

That's a very strong and somewhat alienating criticism. Not only did I enjoy it, I loved it. This film was a cinematic fountain of youth as I've heard it described.

Commercialism blah blah blah

Yup. This topic isn't for reviewing the movie. Too much anti-commercialism bias. I've never felt the nexus attracts enough of the kind of mind mind that can give an honest review of a pop-cultural phenomenon like Star Wars. Good job that's not why we're here.

Getting back on topic...
To me the article comes off as linking shamanism to the tropes that Star Wars fits well, so by extension linking Star Wars to Shamanism.

For some Star Wars is a religion. I LOVE Star Wars, but I wouldn't go that far...

Slightly off topic but I would love to see the Netflix movie ques of individuals who hated the new Star Wars movie.

I thought the new movie was pretty mediocre. If you take away all of the 'star wars' intellectual property, it's just another dumb action movie. The writing was cliche, derivative, and entirely predictable. There are many lazy plot twists of convenience. There was no room for the characters to develop or show any real humanity. Most of the dialog is just there to explain how to get to the next action sequence. The directing was typical of modern action movies - so much stuff going on so fast that it's not believable. The rules of the story's universe are frequently broken or inconsistent (e.g. novice force users with serious skills beating trained jedi). The acting was really bad in some cases (e.g. x-wing pilots), and the whole movie seems like it was designed to give fans their fix of nostalgia. Oh, and the last scene was laughable.

I don't have netflix, but these are some good sci-fi movies I have enjoyed lately:
Interstellar, Solaris & Stalker (Tarkovsky), The Fountain, Snowpiercer

Now those are some damn good movies, i haven't seen stalker yet but it sure is on the list now. I actually agree with many of your criticisms but i think it would be a mistake to expect star wars to get as deep as lets say, the fountain. I enjoyed it for what it was and hopefully JJ Abrams did his job in rebooting the series again and we'll see a lot of improvements to it!
