Here is A pic of the soldering iron Vaporizer I built and a Erlenmeyer flask. You can see the Naphtha nicely on top.

cleaver, nice that it has an adjustable temp. otherwise that could become a problem.

Yes the adjustable temp is very important.

Also I found that the stainless steel bowl is better than a copper one.

Stainless keeps the heat more localized, whereas copper with it's low resistance spreads the heat out too much.

cool idea. i use a soldering iron's ceramic element (the thing under the metal tip) as a butane-free lighter alternative.

is the soldering iron directly coupled to the metal bowl thinger? and did you fashion the bowl yourself or get it from somewhere (where i may be able to as well Smile )

this looks too awesome.
All of my posts are fiction.

Yes the bowl is attatched directly. I replaced the soldering tip with the bowl basically. I bought a bowl then attatched a bolt to the bottom of it. The bold screws into the soldering iron instead of the tip it came with. So it gets direct heat, and very quickly.

I got everything I needed for $20 Canadian at this store

They have an amazing amount of random stuff.

Very cool, but how effective it is? I mean, smoking out of a bowl does fine by me, bong is even better. How is this superior?

Again, very neat design, and if it works well then that's wonderful!

Thanks for the compliments! Smile

I wouldn't say it is superior. I made it because of a thread I read here recently regarding using a soldering iron to make a vaporizer.

People seemed to disagree as to it's effectiveness, so I built one!

It definitely vaporizes the spice. The vapor floats to the top then drop down the sides as it cools. The "draw tube" is on the bottom and the fresh air supply is a glass tube that sticks up near the bowl.
I just wait for it to fill up enough so as not to get hit with the spice to slowly.

I keep an eye on the spice and adjust the temp as needed.

I think this would be best used for changa, and for passing it around in a group type setting.

Very cheap to make, easy to clean and disassemble Smile

Very nice! SWIY may want to consider putting mesh in the bowl though for a more even distribution of heat to the product...possibly (since you say it would probably work best with changa). Also, it'd be interesting to send the vapor through a bubbler such as in this thread. This would possibly help to get all of the vapor concentrated into a more adequate chamber (and of course, to cool it off). The whole thing, with SWIY's setup and the bubbler, could be attached to a single lab-stand.

SWIM was wondering: What kind of a piece is that bowl? What's it from?

I thought about making it a smaller chamber, but I figured a larger chamber would cool the spice down sufficiently.

I never used a bubbler. Mostly because I am afraid of loosing too much spice with all the extra distance the spice must travel. As it is; my whip, and sides of the chamber steal enough of my spice as it is.

The bowl is stainless steel. It used to be a small funnel but I cut the bottom off and found a stainless steel bolt that would both fit into the end of the iron and form smoothly with the bottom of the bowl without any leaks. I may tig weld the bolt right to the bowl at some point (since I am a welder).

The bowl was a rare find! I was looking everywhere for something that would work.

btw if any of you are familiar with a good easy tek for THH, could I get a link? I am having a hard time finding some clear and easy to follow instructions.

Thanks!

SWIM just orders THH at the moment.

The size of the chamber isn't so much SWIM's concern as the pressure involved. It seems to SWIM that a bubbler would pull vapor out of the chamber too fast (due to pressure) for the distance traveled to make much of a difference. SWIM could be wrong about this, but his bubbler (bong-style bubbler pipe) seems to fill up incredibly fast with no loss from the bowl.

I see. Well congrats on your skills! I couldn't engineer something like that if my life depended on it.
