Lye Contamination Options

I was told my spice has a LYE contamination from getting a small amount of the dark red/black aqueous layer on the freeze precepition plate. It appears as mostly white, with some off white crsytals.

I've also heard that the boiling point of lye is ~ 1400 degrees celcius.

Is a product with a small lye impurity safe to vape?

Re crystallize it a couple times. No ammount of base in your end product should be tolerated. Ever.

After recrystallization how would I check if there was still base in product?

If I was you I'd re-add you're spice to fresh warm naps then do a sodium carbanote wash , IMO this would clean it all up in one go ..

Wash your initial extraction solvent with cool distilled water prior to evaporaring and freezing. Doing this removes the base you pulled out as well. You could do a sodium carbonate wash as well but it's a pita that requires you to recrystalize as some carbonate tends to slip through.

would it be enough to redissolve in cold nap and filter thru coffee filter and then just evap?

Cold naphtha will dissolve very little spice. It needs to be heated in a heat bath.

Cold naptha won't get rid of the base material either. If you have a 'v' shaped glass, add a tiny but of cold water. Let it separate, swirl gently, suck out the bottom layer. Do this one more time. Viola! Basic material is gone.

It ain't rocket science, it's just that easy....

so water bath to warm up naphtha, dissolve contimatined spice in minimal naph. do a rinse in minimal cold DI h2o (2 -3 mL) 2x. and pippette out the aqueous layer 2x.

And refreeze / evap and it will be safe for vape?

Sorry new to this. Thanks all for the responses. Smile

edit: I'm struggling to think of a V shaped glass for pipetting out the water layer

Any recommendations Wut?

you're right, we're not flying rockets into the moon. astrophysics has nothing to do with it.
this is solvent/solute interaction.

dissolve solute in warm naphtha, and pour over magnesium sulfate in a jar. decant, and freeze precip or evap.
this method dries the nonpolar solvent, sodium carb washes do not.

You can use 15-20ml to make it easier. A wine glass should work okay too.

@benzyme

That's actually a really good idea! Very happy and it dries quite fast as well in the oven.

Hi,
recently, Cybs' Hybrid ATB Salt Tek w/ mini a/b was done and wanted to make sure that no lye came along with spice(no black soup was sucked up with pulls and didn't notice any of the white substance being pulled from mini A/B ). Don't have any sodium carbanote nor magnesium sulfate as mentioned on previous post. Can swim just do a re-x with warm naphtha and add a small amount of cold H2O, swirl(carefully), pipette out(2x), freeze then fan dried (as 1ce suggested) to insure that if there was any lye in spice to be removed for a safer spice?

Sorry if question is being repeated, swim just wanted to make sure it was done properly and not mess things up and lose wonderful spice.

Or is there no worries about lye if black soup wasn't pulled with nps?

Redissolve in naptha, wash naptha with (preferably) distilled water. You will wash away water solubles like NaOH. Normaly this is done in a sep funnel, and you simply drain the water, but pipetting it out will work just the same. Go ahead and take a few drops od water with you as you pipette. When the water washes clean, check your ph and make aure it's nuetral, and continue on about your business.
