me too, i had to double take to see if it wasn"t animated, incredible, i don"T know whether some have been enhanced, but i"d like to think not!

what is actually going on in #7? What causes a sky like that? What are all those little white things? It sort of looks photoshopped or something.

It's not the sky, it's a dune in the background, lit by dawn. The little spots are bushes. You can check the source of the photograph (National Geographic) in the link.
