Pocketable GVG Alternative Options

Thought I'd share this with the Nexus community. I call it the PGVG. Big grin

The pipe is very sturdy, and I have no concerns about putting it in the pocket of my jeans without any other protection. It is truly pocketable. Right now I'm using my GVG for Changa only, and the PGVG for pure DMT.

I had read the two threads about the HSG pipe and vaping directly off the GVG filter, and decided to get the basic HSG pipe to experiment. After vaping spice directly off the ceramic with the HSG vapor pipe, I had a very painful experience with harsh vapor where it felt like I had been stabbed in the throat. I suppose my technique was bad, but I decided to throw in the towel and work out a better way. Using the HSG pipe with a copper disc like a GVG, the vapor is just as smooth and only a little bit warmer. I use the same technique that I use with my Arc torch lighter and GVG, and can vaporize the whole dose in one toke.

The vaporization is actually a little more efficient IME. There's less condensation in the pipe, and the diameter of the ceramic is greater than that of the copper disc. So the whole disc gets heated more evenly, as opposed to the GVG, where the middle gets a bit more heat. And I think that's also why the extra thickness of the disc is not a problem. The only downside is that you don't get to see that super-thick impressive column of GVG vapor coming your way. You can definitely see the vapor and inhale it in the same time frame, but it just doesn't look as impressive.

So here's how to do it. Very simple, very easy.

Use the same copper disc you use for the GVG if you have one. If you don't already have a GVG, refer to the measurements in the GVG thread. Squeeze the copper disc together around the edge so it becomes thicker. Use the HSG ceramic to push the copper disc down into the bowl, then lightly tap it around the edges to push it down a little more so you have an air gap between it and the ceramic. (You have to do it like this because the sides of the bowl are slippery and if you use your finger from the start the disc will just turn sideways and end up in the lower part of the bowl.)

Once the disc is in position, it won't move. And there you have it. Whatever you do with your GVG, just do the same with the PGVG, and you'll get the same effects. You can even use it for Changa -- just put in a standard GVG screen and it rests nicely on top of the copper disc.

Hope this proves useful to someone. BTW, I paid $100, but it's on sale now for $85 until July 10th.

Smoalk Moar! Laughing

edit: The HSG ceramic is 18mm, so you could obviously buy just the ceramic for $25 and get or make a pipe for much cheaper with the right size/type of bowl to get similar results.

Why not use the same GVG for both changa and freebase? I think shorter tube would cause hotter vapor...

It's the same price as the GVG, do you really think it works better for freebasE?

Using them for different material is just a matter of convenience, since I have both pipes now. I was looking for an option less bulky and obvious than the GVG to travel with into certain situations, and the modded HSG fits the bill. (I'm also checking out a third option which I will post about later this week if it works.)

As far as the vapor goes, it's not hot at all. Just slightly warmer. And I don't think the pipe works "better" for freebase, I just think it's a bit more efficient. The primary reason I feel this way is because after a session, I removed the ceramic filter and torched the copper disc directly to gauge how much spice was left trapped in the disc. Barely any vapor rose from the disc. IME, doing the same with a disc in the GVG results in more vapor. Not a huge amount, but significantly more.

It could be that my GVG technique could use some fine tuning, but I think what's happening is that the HSG ceramic filter has a larger diameter than the copper disc, and when heated air passes through the ceramic, it gets funneled into the smaller copper disc and all material gets vaporized from edge to edge pretty much at the same time.

With the GVG, you have make sure the freebase is put right into the middle of the disc, because the ceramic filter has about 2/3 the diameter of the copper disc. The surface area difference causes the center of the copper disc to initially receive more heated air than the perimeter, and allows some DMT to migrate toward the cooler areas on the disc as vaporization begins. With the HSG pipe, there's nowhere on the disc to run to.

So... I'm not really recommending this OVER the GVG, I'm just putting it out there as one more option. Some people might already have one of these for hash, and they could just buy the ceramic and use the pipe they already have instead of having to buy a GVG. I like it because it's pocketable, and I can conceal it in the palm of my hand, which will make me feel more comfortable tripping outside.

It's great that we have more options as to which tool to use...

I believe this is a matter of efficiency of technique/inhalation, but could also mean that it's easier for you(and maybe others) to use it because maybe it allows more air to flow through. The small size is also a good thing. It's just best to get a small case or soft bag for it if transporting it... Thanks for sharing
