No it is not a majic mushroom. It is not of the Psilocybe family.

From the pics its kind of hard to tell, but there are some characteristics that could be consistent with psilocybe subaeruginosa which is the species found in Victoria.

The two things to look for when it doubt are blue bruising and a spore print.

Take off the stem and place the cap onto a white piece of paper and leave it overnight or until you can see the spores. If the print is a dark purple color you are onto a winner.

If you need any more help identifying check out shroomery forum, they have Victorian specific threads every season...once you know what you are looking for they are very easy to identify.

But feel free to PM me if you need some pointers.

Growing cubensis is great fun, as a previous poster mentioned spores aren't illegal so once again hit up the guys on shroomery and someone will help you out with some spores.

Nope definitley not a sub. Though i saw my first sub for the season in Fitzroy 2 weeks ago i am yet to see them anywhere else in Melbourne yet. We have a mega patch in the garden at work and it has not fruited yet this season. The gills are too light to be a sub unless it is a sterile one. I've seen 1000's of subs over the last 18 years or so and it is not one.
Sorry for the crap photo but this plate was collected last year in Box Hill South or Bundoora. I can't remember which and these are definiteley P.subaeruginosa.

In my experience, they just about grow everywhere in garden beds / parks where woodchips cover the ground. Younger specimens can have creamy colored gills, definitely not always dark. There is quite alot of variability in the species...once found in the bush are alot different to those found in suburbia. The main things i look for when unsure are

1. gill shape and pattern ..Straight gills..creamy or dark purple/black

2. stem is white

3. caramel top/ usually with a nipple...older dryer ones can be white like the OP's pic and also no nipple

4.if all else fails purple spore print. (when learning should spore print all pickings IMO for safety)

I consider myself pretty good at ID after a few years looking...and even now i come across some that i'm unsure about...if i can't be bothered spore printing i just leave them...honestly once you really get into hunting there is no need to risk it over a couple of shrooms.

*******Just as a warning, there are species that grow in the same areas as shrooms that are VERY DANGEROUS if eaten...so until you are sure about what you are doing, spore print everything you find and you will be ok. The added bonus of printing everything is you can collect all the spores from the paper, add to some water and inoculate your own yard Pleased
