My friend who has experiences with mushrooms was interested in having another trip, but asked me whether he should stop taking his medication beforehand or not.
I would say yes for safe measure stop the SSRIs a few days before, but again im not sure.
But I suppose if anyone can explain how mushrooms and Selective Seratonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors interact and the possible implications

I don't know, but I did a quick google search and a guy on another forum
has this to say about Mushrooms in combination with SSRI's:

Quote:
In general SSRIs tend to reduce the effects of psychedelics a bit. But the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) said that some people report that there is NO decrease in effects when psilocybin mushrooms are taken by people taking SSRIs daily. So experts say no, SSRIs don't decrease the effects of shrooms always. Just to be safe, eat a normal dose (around 3g dry) and you will definately have hallucinations normally. If you don't feel anything after an hour, bump it up another 3g. Be careful eating any more than that or you may have a much stronger experience than you want.

Someone in the Shroomery forums confirms this:
Quote:
I've heard it diminishes the magic of the mushies. It all depends on your brain/dosage/what-kind-of-SSRI.

All this is backed up by information found on the Bluelight FAQ's:
Quote:
Hallucinogens (LSD/Acid, psilocybin/Shrooms, Tryptamines ? 2-ct-2,DPT, DMT etc, Salvia): These drugs can be safely combined with the SSRIs. Most people report that they need to take MORE of a hallucinogen to get normal effects. Thus, if you are taking an SSRI, you will probably need more of the drug to reach threshold effects. Some people find that they need to take more LSD, but that shrooms affect them normally. So be careful ? start at a normal dose and only take more if you find that you need to.
NOTE: Do not take ?ayahuasca? while on an SSRI. Do not combine SSRIs with any kind of MAOI, such as harmaline.

SSRI's should never be combined with any Amphetamines either, cause this can lead to Serotonin Syndrome.
But I haven't found any clues sofar indicating that combining mushrooms with SSRI's
is a bad idea. SSRI's & Mushrooms do not seem problematic and doesn't require higher
than normal doses of mushrooms either.

PS:
This got me the idea to combine Kanna, a natural SSRI, with magic mushrooms in a Tea.

Hey by no means does the thread have to be ended, though my previous post seemed pretty content. ;] If anyone has any more relevant info to share for others interested in the interactions of mushrooms and SSRI's, all is welcome.

Very happy

I have taken mushrooms once upon a time while taking an SSRI. I took a pretty hefty dose of Ps cyanescens. Nothing happened. No effect at all. I never took th SSRI again.

Thanks very good to hear a firsthand account as well. Im thinking ill tell my friend he should try to let them out of the system a little and certainly dont combine them. Its good to know there are no apparent negative side effects on health.

Love and respect!!

In addition to the neurochemical interaction of these molecules, you should consider what the SSRIs are being taken for. I would proceed with caution before giving a strong psychedelic drug to anyone who is experiencing a mood disorder. I'm not saying don't do it, just proceed with caution, and pay attention to the emotional and psychological ramifications as well as just the neurochemistry.

Yeah that's definitely a good point to add and agree, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a disorder. It is very important to be informed! I personally have no doubt in my friend should he choose to take the trip, that being his personal decision, he is responsible as well as perceptive.

Thanks!

I was on Luvox, a mild SSRI in my early teens and was munching LSD, MDMA, and Mushrooms pretty regularly without any diminished effect. After stopping I still take them and can't say there is any huge difference though it was a while ago. It depends on the strength of the SSRI and personal biochemistry a lot I would say.
