13-Year-Old Makes Solar Power Breakthrough by Harnessing the Fibonacci Sequence

I just thought this was too cool not to share with you guys.

So anyone who is planning on adding a solar array, you might want to re-think how you arrange the panels. I have a bunch of mini panels that I can play around with. This seems like a fun little project.

I would assume that the same principles could be applied to antennas as well. In one of the fractal documentaries I watched (I don't remember which one) they said that most of the breakthroughs in cell phone technology came from switching over to fractal based antennas. I've always thought it was cool how plants incorporate fractals and the fibonacci sequence. They are definitely sending and receiving something. Very happy

pretty cool indeed .

its funny that its based on such a basic principle..but adds a new perception of looking at things

Awesome.

Aren't coincidences interesting? I had a DMT experience tonight, ate dinner after and overheard some people talking about this at the restaurant. It sounded really interesting and I was going to look it up later, but I just stumbled upon this at the nexus.

How does this work? I don't get it.

Instead of just laying the solar panels out side by side, how we normally see it... This kid chose to set up the solar panels up like leaves on a tree. By mimicking nature, the energy output was nearly doubled.

Take a look at the image that went with the article.

A comment on that page says that this breakthrough isnt such an amazing breakthrough because in fact commercial large-scale solar panels move around to adjust to sunlight position and are significantly more effective than the kid's design, and that this would be more for the older/small-scale fixed panels. Lets see if this can really be applied eventually.

In any case props up for the kid's idea and experiments, that kind of exploring spirit is great to read about, thanks for sharing Smile

It's a nice sculpture. Smile
Maybe it's more efficient over a period of time as the angle of the sun changes.
Where with a flat array, the angle of the sun changes the efficiency, with the tree, many angles are already covered.
I don't see how else it would work.

His next model should mimic codariocalyx motorius and utilize tracking for improved efficiency.\

I believe that the most gain came from the later months where the days are longer but the sun isn't as high.

I really like the aesthetics of the idea. I'd much rather see a forest of solar trees vs nothing but a field solar panels.

Alzabo, that would be awesome to incorporate the codariocalyx motorius concept into it. I could see total efficiency going up quite a bit throughout the year instead of just in the later months.

WOW! That is one smart 13-year-old kid.

I am fascinated with technology engineered on the principle of biomimicry. For another mindblowing example, check out this video, OR read Richard Dawkins' book, The Blind Watchmaker, in which he discusses computer programs that simulate the fine-tuning of biological organisms through natural selection and evolution!
