Anyone ever heard of one? i stumbled upon this the other day browsing the internet.
Heres the Wiki article
Quote:
In its original form, a dreamachine is made from a cylinder with slits cut in the sides. The cylinder is placed on a record turntable and rotated at 78 or 45 revolutions per minute. A light bulb is suspended in the center of the cylinder and the rotation speed allows the light to come out from the holes at a constant frequency, situated between 8 and 13 pulses per second. This frequency range corresponds to alpha waves, electrical oscillations normally present in the human brain while relaxing.[2]
A dreamachine is "viewed" with the eyes closed: the pulsating light stimulates the optical nerve and alters the brain's electrical oscillations. The "viewer" experiences increasingly bright, complex patterns of color behind their closed eyelids. The patterns become shapes and symbols, swirling around, until the "viewer" feels surrounded by colors. It is claimed that viewing a dreamachine allows one to enter a hypnagogic state.[3] This experience may sometimes be quite intense, but to escape from it, one needs only to open one's eyes.[1]

sounds interesting i want one! has anyone ever experienced such a device? Im curious what effects this could have while traveling through hyperspace?! Shocked
what do you guys think?

Ya it makes colors and patterns in your third eye, I've built one.

Might as well just smoke DMT in the dark.

Or wave your hands in front of your eyes in the sunshine.

The patterns create a low frequency somewhere around 10Hz or so (I forget, it's been years)
It's pretty cool science, but the spice blows it out of the water.

I like how these Dreamachines keep popping up into my world view.

If you get a chance check out Flicker:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLicKeR_(film)

There are blue prints for specific sizes, and math equations available to help you build one that can achieve the desired frequency. It's a bit over my head unfortunately due to my "OH LOOK, BIRDIES!" state of mind. Very happy

Have you ever been to hyperspace?

You'll quickly realize there's absolutely no need for some funny looking flashing lights...

I have a Proteus Light/Sound machine I'm very happy with. It helped me a lot when I was first getting into meditation; can also help with waking up in the morning, getting ready to exercise and relaxing deeply. Really fun on MJ, very weird with LSD and mushrooms. Agree w/ House, useless on DMT.

Yes Swim has been to hyperspace a few times. i was considering the possibility that since a dream machine replicates and induces alpha brain wave activity that perhaps doing dmt while watching one could effect the experience even if it is subconsciously. i dont think this hypothesis is to much of a stretch considering environment is very important/influential on the dmt experience. that being said has anyone ever tried this to prove one way or the other?

No, but I have seen and experienced that actual Brion Gyson Dream Machine at a William Burroughs art exhibit about 13 years ago. Cool thing in its proper cultural context, but it's a far, far cry from hyperspace.

I don't know about any other SWIMS, but my hyperspace requires no artificial augmentation. I can't imagine this being a benefit.

And just as a little tidbit aside: Burroughs - just not into the spice - couldn't begin to handle it. Below is link to a letter from him to Timothy Leary in 1961, explaining a recent nut twister:

to me, the dreamachine is a tangible exercise in the potential to moderate ones own mental levels. the science is interesting to me because it appears as an overly simplified introduction to a world shrouded in mystery. 4 levels. that's it. each level pertaining to a very specific set of emotional responses. these levels are the ultimate 'stimuli' for the rest of our body. teach yourself how to move between these levels - how to shift your mind between rooms - and you can virtually guarantee never shedding another tear, never feeling fear or anxiety, etc, etc. mind over matter, so to speak.

too bad it doesn't fix lazy!

Flicker is a pretty decent doco about the dream machine and its origins.
