So the carrier wave is a term borrowed from the telecommunications field:

"In telecommunication, the term carrier (cxr) or carrier wave has the following meanings:
- A waveform suitable for modulation by an information-bearing signal.
- An unmodulated emission. Note: The carrier is usually a sinusoidal wave or a uniform or predictable series of pulses. Synonym: carrier wave.
- Sometimes employed as a synonym for a carrier system, or a synonym for a telecommunications provider company (operator), such as a common carrier."

It is often referred to in Nexus posts, trip reports and in general discussions here and elsewhere, but we have no wiki definition (at least when "carrier wave" is searched) and in the posts I have researched I can find neither a clear definition nor an audio example or reference. I think I know what it sounds like, but it might be useful to arrive at a definition and post examples we find.

Here are two:

Shulman - avant garden at 27 secs to 35 seconds. with this one, you need to listen carefully and turn up the volume - it is embedded in the layers.


walter ego - purple pygmies, an early Simon Posford project. See beginning until about 2 minutes and 6:56 to 7:15 (the sound carries on throughout, but is most distinguishable at these 2 points).

These are both eerily familiar sounds/echoes/reverberations that I have experienced with DMT and also, surprisingly, with Nitrous Oxide.

Sound familiar to anyone? Anyone care to attempt a definition (from the rational to the wacky appreciated!)? Any other examples?

I don't hear anything that resembles the carrier wave in these examples. But the echo sounds are familiar. But for me they're sounds that I sometimes hear while tripping DMT but not the carrier wave. For me that's a very high pitch sound that goes higher until I break through. Or sometimes it's there the whole time and I don't break through. Can be quite uncomfortable.

I definitely have one of those carrier waves I relate to DMT, it's not very similar to the ones you linked to though. Could it be people experience different ones? I can't even really describe the one I experience. Very interesting stuff though, looking forward to seeing where this tread goes.

So... Any other audio examples of your experience of the "carrier wave"? Any other descriptions/definitions/notes? I don't seem to have experienced what others have audio-wise in my sub- or breakthrough experiences. I also wonder why that is...

I've only had the carrier wave once- the first time I smoked DMT. It was amazing.

I've gotten a variety... sometimes a garden-variety sine wave... other times a series of mono-syllabic voices (e.g. ba da dee do la ba in no particular order), and sometimes more of a sine + square wave with quickly alternating tones. See attached for an example of the latter...

i was messing around this morning for an hour and put this little crappy thing together. The background tone is similar to the carrier wave that i hear.The other noises are vaguely similar to sounds often heard, or imagined, that i've encountered. The part near the end better relates to them better than the rest. Does anyone else get these? Its usually on the come down. there not exactly "heard" perse..its kind of like your imagination runs wild with these thoughtsounds and it takes a life of its own

I hear the "carrier wave" as somewhat similar to the processing of a computer, but more like the quantum processing of my mind.
It's very hard to describe because it's a lot more complex than that, but that description is the best I can come up with.

To me it's an electrical sound mixed with something alien (Not talking UFOs, just unknown to my ears); like the buzzing of my mind at a certain frequency that is beneficial to the psychedelic experience. It usually feels very good on my head and is a sign of a good peak experience.
I always proceeded to trip hard the few times I've heard it.

SWIM's carrier wave is sorta like the sound his speakers make just before his cell phone rings, only x infinity.

The carrier wave is much like a sudden rush experienced when you faint, or an IV drug user shooting up. It is a steam locomotive sound coming up in your ears until that is all you can hear. If you have ever fainted and I dont mean "passed out" you know what I mean. ChooChoo ALL ABOARD!!!
