all i am saying is that you don't have to shit your pants when you spill some lye on your arm. Get some vinegar, stay calm, and wash it off. you'll be alright. When working with stuff like lye, always keep several jugs of plain white vinegar around. It may save your skin, and it can be used to neutralize spills. It's not like lye comes in contact with you and immediate eats to the bone. It takes minutes to do that, so you got plenty of time. Maybe not enough time to go to the grocery store, but enough time to calmly remove your clothing and wash any lye away with vinegar. There is really no reason to be afraid. Be afraid of POLICE, but respect lye, and you'll be aight and if you happen to have an accident with lye and you don't have the proper precautions lined up and get injured, don't blame the lye. It's your lack of preparation and safety, there is no reason someone has to sustain burns from lye in a properly set up kitchen laboratory. three things are mandatory when working with lye: - Eye protection!!!!!!! - Vinegar - and a proper spill kit, even something simple like kitty litter becomes effective when combined with vinegar. This includes a bucket and a dustpan. several years back a friend of mine dropped a 1/2 gallon jar during the basification process. The thing shattered on the floor, and both our lower legs were purple. My friend freaked the fuck out, i however advised him to stay calm and take his pants off right away ( ). We both took our pants, socks and shoes off, washed all purple crap away with water followed by vinegar, then spread kitty litter over the spill, scooped up and neutralized with vinegar. Nobody got hurt, it was just a bit messy. we, however, found that purple stuff even made it all the way up to our safety goggles, without safety goggles there would have probably been injured eyes as well. God bless the safety goggles.

I don't think anyone's going to shit their pants and lie down in bed for a week because of some contact with a bit of lye, but it's still definately worth being a little cautious about.
I will eat a product that contains Sodium carbonate or Calcium hydroxide. I will not eat a product contaminated with NaOH or KOH.

Well then, I guess you’ll have to take pretzels off your list of foods you’ll eat. Pretzels are dipped in a lye solution before baking to give them that shiny, slick surface. gibran2 is a fictional character. Any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental.

eating straight lye, no thanks. But we once mixed equimolar solutions of same strength HCL and NaOH together, and drank the salty water resulting from it Chemistry is not nearly as scary anymore when you know what's going on in the beaker in front of you!

exacty rave420, if you know the purity of the chems and you are aware of whats going on, as well as taking the necessary safety precautions, its no problem. Lye is used where I live as a food-grade pH adjuster for olives in conserve, so when you eat olives you are consuming small amounts of lye. Of course this is completely different than saying "its ok to eat a spoonful of lye", nobody would/should ever think of that. In any case, if its dmt extracted for oral ingestion, one should anyways redissolve it in an acidic solution before drinking (which would neutralize any base), as freebase dmt is quite harsh on the stomach and according to some, isnt as effective in its absorption. Just be careful, people, use safety equipment and know what you're doing, and you'll be fine

Lye is not evil or nasty. Your blood stream has plenty of Sodium (Na+) ions and plenty of hydroxide radicals (OH-) running around in it which are necessary for you to stay alive. Lye is not deadly poison, but it is very corrosive at the concentrations which are used in procedures described on the nexus. The problem occurs when you leave it on your skin in concentrated form for more than a short time like pointed out earlier. And be sure to wear eye protection. The tissues of the front of the eye are very sensitive and must remain clear so that you can see. It is a very useful chemical. There are others which are far more dangerous. Respect that it is corrosive and keep safe. Everything mentioned herein has been deemed by our staff of expert psychiatrists to be the delusional rantings of a madman who has been treated with Thorazine who is hospitalized within the confines of our locked facility. This patient sometimes requires the application of 6 point leather restraints and electrodes at the temples to break his delusions. Therefore, take everything mentioned above with a grain of salt...

Good post, and the reason I started the thread was because a lot of people think lye is poisonous and burns you to the bone in milliseconds. Like I've said before, I sometimes find people have irrational fears about lye. But of course you always need to be very careful when using lye. ––––––
