Was the container completely clean and dry? That's the most likely source. If any of the dark solution got into it the colour of the liquid would not be clear, and the taste of the crystals would be effected.

Was the container covered in the freezer? Swim usually puts clingfilm over the top of "unliddable" dishes and containers. It stops the water vapour formed by the heat of the solution in the dish against the ice of the freezer from getting in where it ought not to. Hope this could help.

I had the same thing happen recently, I think it was a mix of oil and h20 possibly. I also got NOTHING out of that jar that should have had like 5 grams in it. you live and learn, then get help.

After having a chat discussion of this last night, I decided to publish this here...

I have had great success during freeze precipitations using a Pyrex glass covered dish shown in the attached photo.

1) Pour your spice laden naptha into the glass bowl and put the cover on it.
2) Place the covered bowl in a deep freeze for several hours. Overnight is usually sufficient.
3) Open the cover and quickly dump the naptha into another larger bowl for ease of pouring.
4) Quickly recover the bowl coated with your spice.
5) Gently run warm water over covered bowl until it reaches room temperature.
6) Completely dry off the outside of the covered bowl with a towel.
7) Open the bowl and pour any remaining traces of naptha into the other bowl
Cool Use a fan and blow room temperature air gently into the bowl to dry the spice
9) Use a razor blade to scrape the spice from the inside of the bowl and chop the spice finely
10) Allow spice to dry completely. This may take repeated chopping and stirring with razor.
11) Admire the fruits of your labor. Smile

dude, the naptha in step 7 is going to have a decent amount of spice in it because you heated it...

you should pour the naptha off as soon as you take it out of the freeze, give it a couple shakes and put it directly in front of a fan..the air will evap the remaining naptha and the cool glass will make the spice way more solid...

heating naptha will always result in some of the weaker crystals to dissolve again.... best to keep things cool for maximum yield.

In step 7 very little naptha is there... maybe a few drops.... but you are right. Perhaps it is better just dried rather than poured off for the reason you stated.

However I was focused on illustrating how to avoid icing by using the container shown, so I did not think to state the following:

I distill the remaining naptha that I poured off to reclaim clean naptha for use in future extractions. I do have a little left at the end of the distillation in the boiling flask that I again freeze precipitate to extract any remaining spice...

Waste not, want not a friend of mine used to always say.

The time I didn't heat the Naphtha, I got NOTHING. I panicked!
You just have to reheat the base by putting it in a warm bath again, and then use heated Naphtha.
You HAVE to heat the Naphtha. The hotter the better.
