I have noticed this too, and I actually smoke on and off. My hypothesis is that there is a correlation between the genes coding for addictive-seeking behavior and alternative thinking. Just think about it, people that need in more or less extent to modify or escape from reality, tend to have a higher concentration of alternative thoughts than main-stream. Or am I completely wrong here?
Who knows, there might be some truth in what you say.. but I generally tend to avoid these kind of genetic explanations as they can be disempowering and are many times used as an excuse (not talking about you, just in general)..
I believe that one should try to really live his ideas and that one's own philosophy of life be expressed in every action.. So if one is 'alternative' but smokes cigarrete, imo thats a negative contradiction and, (not being judgemental on any of you but just really honest to what I believe in), I feel smoking cigarretes is a barrier against one's own personal/spiritual development, just like eating fastfood and so on...
but again, as long as you throw the cigarrete butts on the garbage and try to be conscious if you're not blowing the smoke in the direction of someone eating or whatever, then its one's own business....
