I was guided to this forum by a guy (let's call him Lex) whom I met at a psytrance festival in Hungary last year (I believe he's also a member here). During a 2-CB experience there, we bonded and started talking about our DMT experiences. I told him how I was unable to break through on my first few attempts in 2018 and how my experiences were kind of confusing. The spice I used back then was from an unknown source and Lex recommended I extract the spice myself next time. So here I am, starting to learn more about this substance and hopefully my next attempts will be more successful. I think just by putting in the additional effort of working for the reward will set a stronger base for a positive experience

I'm in my early 30s, happily married, I love psytrance music and I work in architecture. I use low risk substances responsibly 6-12 times a year, now mostly with my wife. Last year and after 12 years of being together she decided to also start experimenting herself. This resulted in us having the best year of our lives. Our music taste aligned, we made many new friends, made some important life decisions and just generally enjoyed the hell out of 2022

Thanks for the concise introduction. You'll find practically everything you need to know about extracting and administering DMT here, along with a broad range of discussions on more or less related topics (even architecture, sometimes). If you're looking for a more direct interaction with other members, there's a chat function - depending on the time of day (and, maybe, the phase of the moon...) it may be a little quiet in the welcome area but with a modicum of patience you'll certainly find someone to talk to. I did a first attempt with a A/B tek with 50g MHRB, heptane and phosphoric acid and I'm expecting roughly a 0.5% yield from 3 pulls. I think my main mistake was that the bark is powdered reeeally finely and I didn't filter it enough before adding lye. I then had problems with very slow layer separation (multiple hours) even after adding more lye (really bad brown emulsion). I left the 1st pull in the freezer for 3 days (was on holiday) and when I came back I was greeted with these amazing white crystals which sparkle like diamonds (about 100mg). No yellow, just sparkly crystals.

For the 2nd pull I added even more lye because the layer separation was just too long. It helped a bit, but for some reason the 2nd pull was much more sticky and it's more yellowish (60mg). I might do a 3rd pull, but I'm in the middle of a 2nd attempt with better filtered acid cook (was a clear red liquid before adding lye). I'll report how this one goes in a few days. The 1st pull is already in the freezer. No problems with layer separation.

I tested both pulls of the first attempt with Ehrlich and Marquis, and both showed what I expected (pink and yellow/orange).

More lye will make it more sticky. It promotes oligomer (short-chain polymer) formation. sounds like you're on track though.

The slightly disappointing, but still respectable, yield may be due to the A/B method - it may take more than three boils to get all the goods out. In that sense, STB might be worth a try -or, seeing as you've very fine powder, one of the limeteks would also work well.

The remaining possibility is that your bark simply only has around 0.5% to be pulled. Honing your overall extraction skills and trying one or other of these extraction methods should help highlight what's up.

Fine particulates are a known cause of emulsions which leads me to suggest you try those alternative methods.

The 1st pull of the second batch was a bit better. I got 300mg out of 100g and it's 90% white crystals and a bit of yellow. It's quite sticky though, I assume from too much lye (about 50g for 100g MHRB in 1l of liquid)? I'll do a heptane wash after the last pull and hopefully this will leave only white crystals.

You may get some effective depolymerisation through dissolving the material in warm heptane. I've tended to find the orange oil - which current understanding strongly suggests is the DMT polymer - drops back out on cooling, however.

Another possible approach to consider is the 'mini-A/B', whereby the acidification step has been shown to break down the polymer quite effectively.

White crystals may be aesthetically pleasing but it's not necessarily more an indication of purity than the yellow colour is of the contrary. DMT is polymorphic and some of those forms have a stronger tendency to display yellow coloration through intermolecular electron transfer (to put it briefly).
