Brugmansias and daturas are not something to play around with.
These are very dangerous plants.

I don't know the quantities required for shamanic use, but they must be realy small.
Doses large enough to produce hallucinations are life-threatening, and hallucinatory states can last for more than two days.

This class of substances is often referred to as deliriants, rather than hallucinogens or psychedelics.

You'll forget you took something and believe your hallucinations are real.
In south america, brugmansia is sometimes used by criminals to steal from people. Victims become extremely docile and suggestable and will voluntarily give any information the thieves ask for.

It is better to stay away from these plants. There is little to gain and a lot to lose with them.

The active compounds in Brugmansia are tropane alkaloids, principally atropine and/or scopolamine - the exact balance and concentration dependent on species/variety/plant part/whim of nature. This variability is an intrinsic part of the danger in using tropane-bearing plant material.

Scopolamine has a use as an anti-nauseant in the case of travel sickness, where it is incredibly effective in a standardised dose of some tens of microgrammes. Atropine is used in ophthalmics as a mydriatic, as well as being an antidote for cholinesterase-targeting nerve agents.

A small handful of people have noted the use of very small amounts of tropane-bearing plants for reduction of nausea and enhancement of visual effects in combination with some of the usual plant-based entheogenic potions.

Brugmansia plants are best enjoyed for their humorous presence, beautiful flowers and bewitching perfume. Their use alone by ingestion for intoxicant purposes is strongly discouraged.

Dude there is a large thread here about how dangerous these types of plants and alkaloids are. Search.

I think it's because of castaneda's books.
I believe it is still not clear how much of the content of these books is fictional. Maybe all of it. But questions about these plants will keep popping up every now and then.

That is one of the plants I don't plan to try ever, Erowid has some information on it, as well links to a couple of books you can buy.

I personally think that the risks are too high and I don't feel its worth the risk to try it for a novelty experience, there are much safer things to expand your mind bud, why not DMT, truffles/mushrooms or LSD?

Not only are these plants dangerous in their immediate effect but repeated use can cause poor brain function, possibly damage (I don't know the mechanism), and are very addictive also.

I know someone who has been using tropane containing plants for years, shamanically he says. The reality is he is a very weird dude and thinks of little more in life than consuming them. He believes in demons and other dark magic. It's slightly disconcerting being around him. He's crazy, a bit dumb, and makes very random connections that defy common logic. Scary vibe. He wasn't like this before, he was a keen botanist and a clever guy.

At one stage I considered sampling microdoses of tropane containing plants but since knowing him and seeing what can happen if one starts down that path it is totally ruled out.
The nearest we ever come to knowing truth is when we are witness to paradox.

WHile they make very gorgeous houseplants, and enhance a soil quality ( daturas are known for pulling heavy metals from soil ), they use comes with a great risk, that can involve disability non reversible or death or heavy mental state.
To stay safe it is better to not use them.
Safest ROA is transdermal. The most dangerous one is oral !

Isn't it curious, perhaps, how such a strong, clearly psychoactive plant isn't banned the way the (much) less harmful things are? All the warnings come from centuries of experience and in quite clear contrast to the modern-day drug war propaganda. A tropane-bearing plant doesn't need to be banned, it takes care of itself perfectly well in that respect...

Main issue with these plants is not their variability, which is not that big as is often believed.

It's the effect itself - with not so high dose you forget that you have taken anything and you get lost in dreamlike series of ilusions or events. If you are in safe environment, it could be ok, if not, you have a problem.

It is of course possible to ingest just proper dose, but it needs strong focus to find it (work with one batch of plant material, start very low, increase doses very slowly, never redose, no combinations with other drugs, well prepared environment).
Much more effort needs to be dedicated to this than with other plants. You could regret any fail in this area.

Ime and imo, the most important point is that it is not worth to do.
Mental effects of tropane alkaloids are quite similar to dreams.
If you ever had a dream which was confusing, produced some anxiety and fear, you already have very good idea about effect of tropanes.
