Bob Snodgrass and Vintage Glass Options

Bob Snodgrass invented the glass pipe, god bless him. Thank him every time you pick up a piece of glass to smoke from (the GVG very likely would not have existed without this man and his life's work).

I grew up in Oregon. At Saturday Market there were always hippies with padded cases of glass, mostly spoons, they would shout "Unbreakable, changes color when you smoke through it!" Another common marketing strategy employed in this scene was the purposeful dropping of a glass spoon on the concrete ground, over and over, just to show off durability. A thick well made boro spoon should be able to handle a fall on the cement, it should bounce not break.

Couple years I saw Degenerate Art and learned of the history of the glass pipe. Wanted one so bad after that, just a dry hammer with the skull and tophat bowl. Just wanted to own a piece by the man who invented them.

Couple years after that I was gifted this by a hippie acquaintance. It is a dry silver fumed hammer by Cameron Tower, one of Bobs first apprentice.

This hippie (not Cam) heard me playing some of my favorite Dead related music. Loser, Jack Straw, Birdsong, Dire Wolf, Ripple, Row Jimmy, Gommorrah, Cats Under the Stars, etc... Plus some of my fave Garcia/Kahn tunes, babe it ain't no lie, been all around this world, ended with To Lay Me Down. Just busking up my daily bread back then. Anyway. I must have really struck a chord with that guy. As I transfered the earnings from my hat into my wallet, dude came up to thank me to the music. These songs mean a lot to so many people.

He gave me this pipe (signed on bottom in what looks like silver, also put a CT in the fuming on bottom). It is a dry hammer, not a bubbler, which is part of what I love about it. He also gave me an awesome Jerry hat pin (lost the Blazers hat and the pin). Also he gave several small perforated-edge squares of paper colorfully illustrated with grinning Cheshire cats. What a guy. Hope he sees this one of these days. Thanks for the pipe bro.

The first year I worked with spice, this was my pipe. I made little wads of Brillo fit perfectly in the bowl. With a bic it may take a few hits by with a torch lighter you can usually get a large dose in one toke. Practice.

Now I've cleaned it, and it is starting its new job as my changa pipe.

I would love to see your Snodgrass or Snodgrass apprentice glass. Hear the stories behind them. Anyone ever buy a piece from Bob at a Dead show?

Beautiful!!!

Wow I just looked this guy up, never heard of him before. Love glass pipes, but only ever had cheap ones which broke easily. I remember seeing a glassblower in action once at a festival and watched mesmerized for ages, 15 years old and tripping on purple oms. Would like to have a go at doing it sometime.

Nice. I long ago lost my Snodgrass Eugene Saturday Market and O.C.F. purchases. Had a few, and a bunch of those little marbles he made from the glass slag left over. Ah, the carefree barefoot Saturdays down by the Fed Bldg... You don't hear his name too often, but you are right, every glass pipe we smoke out now of evolved from his revolutionary process...

The film, Degenerate Art, on YouTube.

Another shot to show off the marbles.
