Can anyone think of a way to do this safely, assuming one did not have a hot plate? Maybe a microwave? SWIM was thinking of using a boiling water bath, but does not want to make his 99% IPA pick up moisture from the boiling water. benzyme wrote: i'm tellin ya, one day i'll interface a mass spec and uv-vis spectrophotometer to a modular synthesizer

Assuming you have electric stove All posts written by Madcap should be regarded as fiction.

you do not want to put ISO in the microwave..that sounds like a really bad idea i dont think there are many safe ways to BOIL IPA...just remember..boiling solvents = dangerous no matter how you do it...BE VERY CAREFUL

No electric stove unfortunately, maybe I should get one of those cheap plugin ones from walmart? Or just throw down the extra $ for a hotplate? benzyme wrote: i'm tellin ya, one day i'll interface a mass spec and uv-vis spectrophotometer to a modular synthesizer

^ if you change le pressure you can get a lower boiling point dudo. Easier more ghetto method would to be put it in a plastic bag in throw it in some boiling or near boiling water. The microwave idea is not a good one

Would a glass mercury thermometer work as well, if I bring the temp up really slowly? benzyme wrote: i'm tellin ya, one day i'll interface a mass spec and uv-vis spectrophotometer to a modular synthesizer

the safest way to boil IPA is OUTSIDE with an electric hotplate...still be SUPER careful though..because any spark could cause some sort of fire...also..be very careful because its HOT....but do it outside..away from prying eyes and noses..and do it as fast and carefully as you can...
