I'm not an opiate user (I'd much rather go sideways than up or down) but a few summers back I decided to grow some poppies and slice the pods just to see what was involved in the process and to experience the taste and smell of opium.

Then I had the (as it turned out, not so bright) idea of seeing what happened if I hit all three of the major/"classical" opioid receptors at the same time. The morphine in opium has affinity for both the mu and delta receptors, salvinorin-A binds to the kappa receptor.

I placed a small amount of raw opium (just enough to elicit a noticeable response) and a small to moderate amount of a 40x Salvia extract (just enough to get some visuals) in a pipe then hit it with a torch lighter... the result was unlike either of the two drugs taken alone. I expected/hoped-for a mild Salvia experience without or with less dysphoria, perhaps even with some euphoria, instead I got profuse sweating (much more than Salvia alone) and what must have been a strong spike in body temperature because my glasses completely fogged up (again, much more than Salvia alone). There were no visuals (just blackness for about a minute) and none of the "twisting" feeling I consistently get from Salvia. While the experience wasn't dysphoric it certainly wasn't euphoric. It was a very unnerving experience and I was glad I hadn't used more of either drug in the mix.

Take care with your experiments,
- Tse

Thanks for the report, quite an original experiment.

Are you certain your poppies were Papaver Somniferum?

Also, torching opium directly destroys much of the goodness; ideally it needs vaporising.
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.

Yes. Grown from white poppy seed imported from India.

I'm aware of that. A regular lighter doesn't work very well for Salvia so I loaded the opium first and didn't burn it as hard as I would of if it had been Salvia alone.
